My colleague mentioned there are several photographs where scientists use hats during documentation to give a sense of proportion to the specimen photographed. She assumes this is a similar instance.

Smithsonian Institution Thanks for the heads up! I'm going to read that article you linked to. I looked at the photo again and the hat does make a big difference! Modern cameras might not need that sort of thing sometimes but that's due to technological discoveries in photography. Thanks again!

Netty - The United States Marines in Nicaragua, see: books.google.nl/books?id=SL9PAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA19&lpg... As Ross E. Rowell is given as "Maj. Ross Rowell developed close air support techniques while commanding Marine Observation Squadron One in Nicaragua in the 1920s" I think this picture was taken in the 1920's in Nicaragua.

Thanks Kees Kort and Kees Kort for figuring out their full names we'll update the catalog record. I found a short article in the Washington Times dated Aug. 30, 1925 that lists all four men (starts at the top of the 6th column). It a few months earlier than the date on this photo but it's clearly a copy photo so it could have been taken anytime before then.
