    This Second Lieutenant wears the cap badge of the General Service Corps in his new uniform of 1914/15. The London Gazette of 14 Jan 1915 records the Temporary Commission of a Second Lieutenant F Newhouse into the Royal Engineers effective from 4 Dec 1914. The London Gazette of 21 Jul 1917 records Temporary Captain F Newhouse RE as having been Mentioned in Despatches in the Salonika theatre of operations. In the London Gazette of 20th March 1922, Captain Frederick Newhouse of the Royal Engineers relinquishes his Commission and is granted the rank of Major with effect 1st Sep 1921. //

    The Intelligence Corps, abbreviated as INT CORPS, of the British Army was only formally established on the 15th July 1940 (Army Council Instruction 1020/40 to Army Order 112/40). In the 1914-18 war, military Intelligence Staff Officers were seconded or drawn from other Corps and Regiments for intelligence duties, which might correspond with such employment for a Royal Engineers officer in Salonika? Major F Newhouse would have been about 45 years of age in 1940, and may well have been recalled to the Service.

    He shows up again in several places after the Great War. As Major F Newhouse, a ship passenger on a couple of occasions. He might also have originally dropped the 'k' from Frederick, there's a plausible Frederic Newhouse BSc (Eng) doing work on Middle Eastern waterways before the 14-18 war. He did rejoin the Colours in the Second World War. It is unclear where he came in, but the London Gazette of 7 Dec 1943 shows Captain F Newhouse RE (97555), an Emergency Commission, resigning his commission wef 11 Dec 1943 and being re-granted the rank of Major.//
