    Like many of us do when the new year rolls around, we forget to advance the year. The soldier mustered out in October 1865, and since he states this in the letter to Adeline, the January after this would be 1866. So we assume this to be simply a clerical error on Whitman's part. The pension examiner for the case noticed the very same thing and noted that in his summary. Jackie U.S, National Archives
