    Not quite Alan. There was nothing called Metropolitan Airlines. Metropolitan was name of the model given by Convair. This was (I believe) the first Model 440 converted at some unknown date but probably already on the production line early 1954 since it was initially laid down as a Model 340 c/n (msn) 148. It kept the registration N8424H and was testflown/used by Convair until sold. A pity no date is known for this photo since I have some conflicting information regarding dates.... Stig

    Well it says 440 all over the aircraft....
    It was initially laid down as a 340 for Lufthansa (you have various photos of that). Lufthansa chose to canx their order and Convair modified it to a 440 before delivery to Union Carbon
