    Atlas 109D launched John Glenn, the first American to orbit the earth. The re-entry of the missile was seen in Brazil and, debris from Atlas 109D was found in South Africa.     The aircraft pictured is a Douglas C-133B-DL Cargomaster. The side opening "petal" doors (the doors with the yellow bands) of the B model were installed to facilitate the loading of ICBMs such as the Atlas shown. This aircraft was sent to storage in June of 1971, then scrapped by 1974.
