The written record suggests that this was at Wallops. This is anecdotally supported by that fact that there really was no need to travel all of the way to Rosie Roads to complete basic open-water training, especially with all of the other activities and training occurring at Langley, Johnsville, the Cape, and factory visits at Kearney Mesa and Marshall and STL during this same time. Doesn't make much sense.

At the time UDT training in the East Coast was held at Little Creek, VA, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The aircraft the Mercury Seven are standing in front of (Convair F-106B Delta Dart, AF 59-0158) escaped being blown out of the sky as a target drone and was recently restored. Awesomeawesomeawesome Fifty years ago, the newly created NASA announced the selection of seven military test pilots who would be serving as America’s first astronauts. Officially, they are Astronaut Group 1, but most people call them the Mercury Seven. Selected from Naval aviators were Malcolm Scott Carpenter, Walter Marty (Wally) Shirra, Jr., and Alan Bartlett Shepard, Jr.. Selected from Air Force pilots were Leroy Gordon (Gordo) Cooper, Jr., Virgil Ivan (Gus) Grissom, and Donald Kent (Deke) Slayton. Rounding out the seven, from the United States Marine Corps, was John Herschel Glenn, Jr.
