jamica1 What is Vernacular Technology?

Cloyne and District Historical Society Something that people build simply from their own knowledge and experience of building. As distinct from technology designed by a technical expert. So a vessel designed by a marine architect is not vernacular technology but this is.

I remember Mr. Garbutt. We had a cottage on the east side of the lake and stored our boat at his camp on the west side. As a kid in the late fifties, I was very impressed by what was probably also "vernacular technology". The boats were stored under a roof and out of the water, parallel to the shoreline. When we arrived from Toronto (usually late Friday night), he would hand-cranked a moveable launching slip to the bay where ours was stored, lock it into place, and then crank the boat down into the water. He also had a warehouse full of ice blocks stored under sawdust. The blocks had been cut from the lake during the winter and we always loaded one up for our icebox.

Thank you Paul for the input. You & I must have crossed paths many times since I grew up with Popi Camp as our jumping-off point to the east side of the late. We are always looking for information about our images and their locations. Maybe you could share some more memories &/or pictures of the camp or the lake in general.
