Macchi M.39

    This is actually a Macchi m.52 (many photos of it are miss-identified as being of the M.39, due to their close similarity). The larger outboard wing radiator area and the cut in the inboard area are a clue, as well as the Italian tricolore on the rudder, which no M.39 (either numbers 5, 3 or 1) wore during the race. The slightly different windshield is another clue. About 50% of images here at SDASM identified as the M.39 and actually of the M.52 and M.52R. Again, very similar, but not identical planes. In other photos the much pronounced arrow of the m.52 wings are a clue too. The presence of the fascia roundel (not wore originally, but much later in time by the M.39) is yet another clue.
