Name of the pilot in the caption is misspelled. Edgar Neher was the pilot and Alfred Schaller an "office manager" for Pacific Air Transport were killed in the fatal crash of a Pacific Air Transport (P.A.T.) Ryan M-1 during an Air Mail flight on April 3, 1927 in Gustine, California (approximately 20 miles from the city of Turlock). Neher's name is listed as "Edward" in most sources, however, comments from his family make it clear that his first name was "Edgar". See: www.gendisasters.com/california/9480/gustine-ca-mail-plan... See story and comments about the pilot's name here: www.gendisasters.com/california/9480/gustine-ca-mail-plan... "Charles A. Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis probably is the best known airplane in the world. The airplane's transatlantic flight brought fame to T. Claude Ryan, whose name is connected to the company that built it--Ryan Airlines, the original Ryan company. But, although the names "Ryan" and "Ryan Airlines" appear on the plane, history has overlooked the other name closely intertwined with the legend of "Lucky Lindy" and his Spirit--Benjamin Franklin Mahoney, owner of Ryan Airlines". www.charleslindbergh.com/plane/mahoney.asp
