Born 1892 at Meanwood in Leeds. He was the son of Simeon and Elizabeth Naylor. In 1911 he was living with his aunt and uncle on Wood Lane in Bramley and he was described as a Trimmer in a Tailor Shop. He married Mabel Duckworth on 16th Jan 1915 at St Peter's Church, Bramley.

Oldest child and only son of Walter Audear [b.1867 York d.1949] and Clara Audaer [b.1869 Leeds]. Born on 4th September 1892 and batised at St Bartholomew’s, Armley, Leeds. I have not been able to find him or his family in the 1901 census. The 1911 census records him living at 117 Tong Road, Leeds [the property still survies], with his parents and two younger sisters Kathleen Mildred [b.1897 Leeds] and Constance Ellaline [b.1907 Leeds]. His father’s occupation, along with Ernest’s, is listed as Dentistry. They were not in fact dental surgeons, but makers of false teeth. His father appears in various Kelly’s Directories as an “Artificial Teeth Maker”, his father being self employed and Ernest worked with him. On 21st October 1915 he was promoted to Temp. “2nd Lieut. [would this be from the rank of Oficer Cadet?] and also on the same date from the Reserve Battalion to the Service Battalion. He must have been a student of the University of Leeds as he was a member if the OTC and his name is commemorated by the University. He is also commemorated in the memorial book of the First World War Fallen held at St Bartholomew’s, Armley, Leeds, and also on the Armley War Memorial. Having no known grave, he is also commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial
