João Pessoa foi colonizada, por questões estratégicas, a partir de um rio (Rio Sanhauá - afluente do Paraíba) e não de sua orla marítima, como a maioria das capitais brasileiras que são banhadas pelo mar. O porto da cidade, mostrado na imagem, era conhecido como "Porto do Capim". O nome deve-se ao grande fluxo de capim, feito em canoas, que chegavam no ancoradouro. Este era utilizado como alimento dos animais, mulas e burros, meios de transporte terrestre naquela época.
