In 1883 the licensee, Jeremiah Murphey, was found guilty of providing liquor at prohibited hours. The case revolved around the question of whether the Keefes, his customers, lived inside or outside the 4-mile limit which would entitle them to buy drinks as "bona fide travellers". The judge fined him £1 but advised him to appeal "because there are so many points in the case".
