  "Staigue Fort is situated in the village of Staigue eleven miles from the village of Sneem and about six miles from Derrynane. It is built of peculiar shaped stones and is circular in shape. There are winding flights of stairs along the interior of the walls and several caves which are great items of interest to tourists. Antiquarians explore these caves with lighted candle. There is a caretaker in charge who charges people at the gate.
  The history of the fort is as follows. It is supposed to be built by a widow and her son who lived in the village long, long years ago. It was built in one night. The widow drew the stones a distance of ten miles over the mountains in her apron while her son built. When she was bringing the last apron of stones her apron strings broke and the cairn of stones are to be seen to the present day where they fell to the ground. This is supposed to be the reason why Staigue Fort was never finished."
