Born second quarter of1894. The 1901 census records him living at 63 Lichfield Grove, Finchley with his parents and older brother [the property still exists].

The national Probate (index of Wills & Administrations) records the following
“NEWMAN Cyril Arnell of 160 Marylebone Road, Middlesex. Second-lieutenant died 28th April 1917 in France. Administration London 2 November to Ragnhid Torp Newman, widow. Effects £187 10s."
He had only married Ragnhid in 1917 [date unknown] so they can only have been married a matter of a few months, she died in 1976. A living member of his family has posted photographs of his grave on Ancestry.com

"A scene on the Menin Road near Hooge, looking towards Birr Cross Roads, during the battle on 20 September 1917. The wounded on the stretchers are waiting to be taken to the clearing stations; others able to walk are making their way along the road as far as possible.

"Identified are: Major (Maj) G A M Heydon MC, Regimental Medical Officer of the 8th Battalion (fifth from the left with his arm in a sling). To his left is Private W Bain and next to him is Private (Pte) 'Spud' Murphy. To Pte Murphy's left (wearing a pack) is 58 Lance Corporal (LCpl) Roy Arthur Findlay MM, all are members of the 1st Field Ambulance.

"Shortly after the photograph was taken a shell landed in approximately the area where Maj Heydon and Pte Murphy had been standing. The shell killed most of the wounded on stretchers and LCpl Findlay was blown under the truck, shown lying on its side to the right."

David Lyon Scott enlisted in the Gordon Highlanders as a Private soldier [Service Number 2197] and was quickly promoted to Corporal, commanding an infantry section. He was granted a temporary Commission into 4th Battalion Gordon Highlanders (Territorial Force note the 'T' on his collars) on 3rd December 1915. [LG Issue 29396 Page 12299 dated 7 Dec 1915]. He was the son of Mr and Mrs George Scott of Aberdeen. 4th Gordons website at: www.4thgordons.com/index.html contains the expurgated 8th Brigade Operations Order for the attack at Hooge (Second Bellewaarde) of 25th September 1915 (Scott is not listed here as wounded - but there is a LCpl 'Alexander' Scott listed as wounded on 7th October 1915 - son of Mr & Mrs James Scott of 24 Merkland Road, Aberdeen. Following on from the 8th Brigade orders referred to above - the attack by 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders - in 76th Brigade - is described as follows in The Official History of the War: Military Operations France & Belgium, 1917, Vol. VII, by C. Falls. (page 216/7): "Under Brigadier General C.L. Porter of the 76th Brigade at Arras on 9 April 1917, ..... the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders took the German fourth line ..... [assaulting troops prepared to go over the top at 6.45pm and cleared the line of departure at 7pm] ..... the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders (still comparatively fresh) ..... passed through the 8th Brigade and assaulted under a barrage ..... The Gordons advanced gallantly and made some progress, but again [machine-gun] fire from Feuchy Chapel forced them back to the line of the Neuville - Feuchy Chapel road, where they dug in. This was almost certainly the attack in which 2Lt Scott was killed. Captain J C Dunn (2 RWF) gives an accurate description of the consequences of such an action "It was not unusual .. for a brigade to reach its objective with only 100 casualties, more or less, and have 1000 in falling back because the position was untenable, made so in part by its own failure to help clear its flanks during the advance." p. 339 'The War the Infantry Knew 1914-19'.//

The 1901 census shows him living at Ashgrove Rd, Ivy Bank, Aberdeen with his parents, George and Mary Ann Scott and 9 siblings ranging in age from 1-19. His father was a Watchmaker. The National Probate Calendar states that he lived at 29 Richmond Hill Road, Aberdeen. The Medal Card shows that this is the address of David's father and indeed Probate was granted to George Scott, watchmaker and jeweller.

He also has a gravestone at Allenvale Cemetery in Aberdeen, details are David Lyon Scott kia 9-4-17 Aged 23 (b ca 1894) Mother Mary A Cowe d 5-8-1920 Aged 63 (ca 1857) Father George Scott, Jeweller d 22-9-1920 Aged 64 (ca 1856) One of his sisters, Jessie Cowe Scott, was my grandmother and died in February 1920 in childbirth. So she and both parents died in the same year. I'm about to look at the family history on this side, so this info is very welcome.

George Ivor Le Duc Neal was born in Paddington in 1886, the son of George (a builder & contractor) and his wife Alice. He had two younger brothers who went on to become a major and a captain in WW1.

Medal Index Card states that he arrived in France on the 23rd January 1915. He was entitled to the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
