Lodge Baby wasn't alone. It wasn't uncommon for home economics programs to borrow "practice babies" for their students to care for over several weeks or even longer. If the baby was borrowed from an orphanage (as was generally the case), his or her time with the college students was considered a bonus to adopting parents. See Megan Elias, "'Model Mamas': The Domestic Partnership of Home Economics Pioneers Flora Rose and Martha Van Rensselaer," Journal of the History of Sexuality 15(1)(2006): 65-88.
