Japanese sailors standing on board a steam pinnace with HIJMS IZUMO in the background

    The ship is the Izumo.
  • Australian National Maritime Museum on The Commons said:
Antoine R Hmm, IZUMO did not visit Sydney at this time, there were three vessels, IWATE, ASAMA and YAKUMO.
  • Antoine R said:
Maybe this photo is of another Japanese visit. As I know the Izumo visited Australia in 1928.
  • Antoine R said:
Why the Izumo? Look at photos of the Iwate of 1920s and you'll see that she didn't have a searchlight top (unfortunately I don't know the correct term in English) on her main-mast while the Izumo did.

Antoine R Hmmm, it looks a lot like IZUMO. Thank you for pointing that out Antoine R. The other reason it is most likely IZUMO, is because the previous photograph in the series is this one:
Japanese Naval vessel, possibly HIJMS YAKUMO, in Sydney Harbour, January 1924

    This is the Izumo.
