Hammerfest was struck by fire in 1890, which wiped out almost half its buildings. In 1891 Hammerfest was the first town in Northern Europe to have electrical street lights. The town was fortified by the germans during WW2, and was completely wiped out leaving only a church standing when the germans fled the allies february 14th 1945. Hammerfest nowadays is a modern town with a population of app 10 000. Shipping port for LNG both to the US and Europe. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammerfest

This is aproximatly the same view of the modern Hammerfest.
Not as charming as we lost all of the old wooden architecture at the end of World War 2.

As mentioned above, the settlement in Hammerfest goes way back in time, and as a matter of fact, in the front of the picture you can see some depressions in the field, whis are remains of houses dating back to the younger stone age, aprox. 5000 years old.
