Learning from history opens the way to moving forward with respect in health professions, to provide services that will ensure better health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, many of whom continue to experience adverse and traumatising experiences with health care. The lock hospitals are part of a wider history of medical incarceration, as exemplified by Fantome Island, which also housed a leprosarium for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people from 1940-73. These histories remain very present in the memories and lives of many families on Palm Island. These and other episodes of medical incarceration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples can be seen as archetypal examples of the role of health care professionals and systems in colonisation, contributing to intergenerational traumas. The adjacent Fantome Island was gazetted as an Aboriginal reserve in 1925[16]. The following year the Fantome Island Lock Hospital was established and began taking patients suffering from venereal disease[17]. By 1937, Fantome Island had become the health clearing station through which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people would travel before being admitted to Palm Island. The Island was also used for tuberculosis patients and for convalescents from the mainland[18]. In 1939 the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary took over the running of the Fantome Island hospital[19]. Before it closed in 1973, the hospital also included a leprosarium which served as Queensland’s longest-running Aboriginal-only medical segregation facility[20]. The Pullenvale-Pinjarra Hills-Bellbowrie-Anstead-Moggill District covers an area of 55 sq km in the south-west region of Brisbane. It is bounded by the D’Aguilar and Mount Elphinstone Ranges with elevations of 200-600 meters above sea level in the west and north and by the Brisbane River in the south. an easterly corridor, Moggill Road, is the main arterial access to the city via the western Brisbane suburbs of Kenmore and Indooroopilly. The original vegetation that once covered the district was referred to as ‘Araucarian Vine Scrub’ i.e. forests dominated by emergent Hoop Pine (Araucaria Cunningham), nothphyl (medium-sized leaves), and microphyl (small-leaved) trees which supported vines. Within this general classification, three sub-groups could be identified depending on localized growing conditions including soil type, topography, and local climatic conditions. No extensive areas of this original vegetation remain in the district. However, a six-hectare example of the districts’ former vegetation survives at ‘Smiths Rainforest’ in the Brookfield Valley. Moffat Beach is a coastal suburb in the Sunshine Coast Region, Queensland, Australia. The suburb and beach were named after James C. Moffat, a chemist from Brisbane, who established a holiday house on Moffat Head in 1883.[3][2] The Queen of the Colonies pandanus tree stood on the headland above the site where 13 passengers from the Queen of the Colonies shipwreck were cast ashore in a small boat, during stormy weather in 1863. Isisford Located in ‘The Outer Barcoo’ Isisford was established in 1877 by William and James Whitman who were travelling through the country. When crossing the Barcoo River, they broke an axle on their wagon and decided to stay nearby. They built a store, hotel, butchery, saddlery, and blacksmith shops. The establishment was called Whittown but the name was changed in 1878 to 1879 to Isisford after the ford in the river and proximity of Isis Downs Station homestead. ‘Isis Downs’ was named after the Isis River in England.
