The paper mill on the other side of the river was Crown Zellerbach for 60 some years. My Grandfather told me ( long ago) that when they (<- ?) were clearing the land to build the mill that children who lived in the area would get a penny a piece for arrowheads they could find. At one time this was quite the gathering place for several of the different Indian Tribes of the area. At the end of the Oregon Trail. West Linn is on the other side of the river.

Not to be a group spammer, but I'm an admin for a group called Oregon's Highway 97, and this would be a great addition to our group. I always look forward to seeing the latest posts from the OSU Arhives.

I love bridges and I have crossed this one in Newport many times, A right turn from it leads to "Old Newport", a charming if somewhat touristy fishing village. In the space of a few blocks you can fish from the piers, have beer at Rogues and explore an underwater aquarium.
