  One ought to know that there are no Alligators in India, only Crocodilians. These will be either Saltwater or Mugger, freshwater, crocodiles. Based on the length of snout I'd say this was a Mugger. With that said I think that the original captions should remain because they tell us something about the use of the word "Alligator" at the turn of the Twentieth Century.
