This was Ted Hall's "Southern Roadable", built by the Southern Aircraft Company in Garland, Texas. It was featured in many magazines, including Popular Science, during the first half of 1946. Hall was designing a more advanced flying automobile, the ConVairCar, (models 116 and 118) while working for Convair in San Diego during this same period. Southern did not develop this model beyond the test flight stage.

Any other photos of this aircraft? The serial number is not visible, but likely is NX59711. It would be great to see a photo of the description placard in front of the plane. I understand it was destroyed in a fire.

Strange how this accident looks like a collision between an aeroplane and a car..... Sad ending. Stig

Waterman Aerobile, original. On loan from NASM. Suspended over a Beech Staggerwing, before the AVG 'Flying Tiger' exhibit was created. (RAF hut still remains.)
