    Newspaper account: SHOP DOOR THEFT. Jane Thompson (40), was charged at North Shields with stealing from the shop door of Messrs W. Gillespie and Son a pair of boots valued at 5s 11d, on the 12th inst. A pawnbroker's assistant spoke to the woman trying to pledge a pair of boots with hi, but failing to give a good account of herself he had her detained and sent for the police. Sergt. Scougal said that when charged she replied that she bought the boos when in company with her husband on Saturday nights. He made inquiries and found this statement to be untrue. Accused, who pleaded not guilty, was fined 10s and costs. --- Shields Daily Gazette, 13 Jul 1904, page 3

Had considered that it might be older because of the date on the barrels (alcohol maturing, etc.), but we have a very finite set of photos of this establishment, and from how Poole Photographers usually operated (plus the clothing), I'd feel fairly confident this one was taken around the same time as the other two...

    She probably wore her curlers under her scarf, they were not meant to be seen but exposed when the police took the photo and probably pushed the scarf back to show more of her face.

    Susan was a typical working class woman of her time and is shown wearing a SHAWL. This useful and cheap item of attire was worn by most working women before WW 1 in the North and continued in use in Lancashire by the older generation until the 1950s. It is unlikely that she was a Muslim.
