It appears this photo depicts the F/A-18A Hornet in which Hank Kleemann lost his life at Miramar NAS on December 3, 1985. Kleemann is best known as the pilot of an F-14 Tomcat with Radar Intercept Officer (and later Vice Admiral) Lt. David "D.J." Venlet which shot down a Libyan Sukhoi Su-22 during the "Gulf of Sidra Incident" on August 19, 1981. The "sneak pass" right over the water at the threshold of mach 1 was always my favorite part of San Francisco's Fleet Week airshow. It's always a big crowd pleaser because you can't hear it coming and if your attention is focused elsewhere it's a huge surprise for those watching just on the waterfront. 2005 was a good year for photographers trying to catch the Prandtl-Glauert shockwave hitting the water.
