An equestrian portrait of Major General George Gordon Meade looking out over the battlefield at Gettysburg where the Union army under his direction won one of its greatest battles, defeating Confederate General Robert E. Lee. He holds a pair of binoculars in his right hand and his hat in his left hand. A sword hangs from the left side of his saddle. The horse featured is Meade's favorite horse, Old Baldy. This photograph, by William H. Tipton, appears to have been made before a bronze plaque was attached to the right side of the base (although a bronze plaque on the front of the base appears to be present). Other photographs taken of veterans at the monument show the plaque in place at the time of the Great Reunion. A photograph of the model for the Meade statue was also made by Tipton. The statue was sculptured in 1895 by Henry K. Bush-Brown, (1857-1935), and the monument cost $37,500. The statue stands across the battlefield from the statue of General Robert E.
