This is the very first (c/n 14952 / AK571) of 20 Kittyhawk Mk Is [Curtiss Model 87A-1] delivered to the RAF. These first 20 a/c were equipped with four .50 cal MGs, making them roughly equivalent to the P-40D variant of the USAAC. The rest of the Mk I order was delivered with 6 wing guns [Curtiss Model 87A-2], making them the British equivalent to the USAAC's P-40E version, but they were still designated as Kittyhawk Mk Is. The next and subsequent batches were designated as Kittyhawk Mk IAs.
