"The Consolidated Vultee P-81 long-range jet escort fighter is the first plane ever flown with a gas turbine engine designed to drive a propeller. Powered by a gas turbine engine in the nose and a jet engine in the tail, the trim fighter will fly at a speed of more than 500 mph. "Because the two engines operate independently, the powerful fighter can fly on either one or both. Their combined horsepower is virtually the same as that produced by all four engines on a heavy bomber. "Gross weight of the single-plane fighter is 19,500 pounds. Its NACA laminar-flow wing has a span of 50 feet 6 inches; length of the plane is 44 feet 8 inches; and height is 13 feet 6 inches. "The P-81 is in production for the Army Air Force at Convair’s Vultee Field division, Downey, California." - Press Release for this photograph (16_003285.tif) from Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation, San Diego, California, dated November 15, 1946.
