Museums of History NSW - State Archives Collection Never too easy - just that I have been there before with the Henry King photo. I remember three years ago having huge problems trying to find what the occasion was (when Trove was young).

Portrait minatures first became popular in 16th century Europe, and by the 18th and 19th Century, painters became known for their specialism in the field. They fulfilled the role of the modern day photograph, often given to family or loved ones while the sitter was away.

This portrait artist is probably the Irish born Nathaniel Hone [1718-1784]. He was active about York, etc., until about 1742 he married and moved to London. Some of his works are at the NPG -- www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/person.php?LinkID=mp022...

Queen Victoria .... and Prince Albert. Both statues have been moved around the Square, like a game of chess.

The Queen Victoria monument was unveiled in 1888 - www.publicartaroundtheworld.com/Queen_Victoria_Monument.html I cannot see any trace of the cable tram lines seen here - www.flickr.com/photos/powerhouse_museum/3022880907/ which implies the date is between 1888 and 1894. The original lamps and bollards were removed. and 'landscapers' were let loose (early 1900s? with electric tram lines) www.flickr.com/photos/powerhouse_museum/2696680241/
