Canal boat, on the Caledonian Canal, Scotland / Rex Nan Kivell

If this photograph was taken on the Caledonian Canal, then this is provbably the famous paddle steamer "Gondolier". She was built in 1866 and spent all of her working life on the canal. When did the N.L.A, acquire this image? The Gondolier appears to be out of service, there is no boat on the davits at the stern, no lifebelts along the rails, no flags. This may have been how she looked when scrapped in 1939. She was towed out to Scapa Floe and sunk there to block one of the approaches.

Hello - this photograph was acquired by the Library in the 1970s from the photographer, Rex Nan Kivell. It's one he took himself during the First World War, which perhaps explains the lack of markings and so forth. Thank you for your interest!
