Coalstoun Lakes National Park Rising 200m above a broad cultivated valley, Mt Le Brun contains two large craters which occasionally fill with shallow lakes. The crater lakes are protected in Coalstoun Lakes National Park. Formed more than 600,000 years ago, the mountain is one of the youngest volcanic formations in Australia. Melaleucas and blue gums fringe the lakes which are sometimes completely dry and covered in sedgelands. The vine scrub covering the crater sides is one of the few dry rainforest remnants in this area. This photo (and subsequent photos) depicts the wreckage of an aircraft flown by Private Otto V. Meyer and Sergeant J.O. Burnett that crashed at Lufbery Field in Wantagh, Long Island (NY) on Sunday, April 20, 1919. Pvt. Meyer reportedly died instantly, whereas Sgt. Burnett is described as having survived without breaking any bones, but possibly suffering serious internal injuries. The crash is detailed here on the front page of the Friday, April 24, 1919 issue of the Nassau County Review: Killed in Aero Fall Otto W. Meyer, a private at Field No. 2, Mineola, was instantly killed Sunday afternoon when the aeroplane in which he was riding with Sergeant J. O. Burnett went into a nose spin when about 200 feet in the air, and crashed straight to the earth before it could be righted. Both of these young men were members of the 357th Aero Squadron, recently transferred from Lufbery Field, where the accident took place, to Camp Mills. The machine was taken out by Sergeant Burnett, with Meyer as a passenger, and was going along quite well, in a very heavy wind, when it suddenly made the dive and in an instant had reached the ground. The lower part of the field is a marsh, and the engine was buried several feet in the bog. Meyer was thrown clear of the machine, but Burnett was caught and had to be freed by eye-witnesses who hurried to the scene and helped in getting him out. Meyer was killed instantly. Sergeant Burnett was hurried to the Base Hospital at Mineola where it was found that no bones were broken, but internal injuries were feared. Meyer was a native of California, while Sergeant Burnett, who is a Princeton man, comes from Kentucky. The report of the accident to these young men cast a gloom over the workers at the War Camp Community Service Club at Freeport, where they were well known, as were all the boys at Lufberry Field where the 357th Aero Squadron was formerly stationed, and the word of the death of young Meyer was received with sincere regret. He had become deeply attached to one of the Freeport returned soldiers, Willie Noon, and the two had been inseparable when Meyer was off duty.
