Beach on Walcheran Island

I live on Walcheren Island and I was wondering whether some of these photo's were made during the "inundatie": in 1944 the dunes were bombed to flood Walcheren, so the Germans couldn't use their tanks. Walcheren has been flooded for months, killing trees and leaving houses soaked with salt water. Even nowadays salt is leeking out of the walls!

Hello and thanks for your comment! Yes, I do believe that these photos were taken during that flood. There are some photos that you can see that show the flood. Thank you for the information. It's very interesting to know that you are still seeing the effects of what happened in 1944!

Thanks for your reaction! Maybe it's nice to know the "Beeldbank Zeeuws Archief", you can find it via either www.zeeuwsarchief.nl or www.zebi.nl. There are a lot of pictures there about the same period and events.

(Seven years later, but hey …) Yes, these photos were taken after the island was inundated — the big gap in the dyke you can see in the picture was the result of the Allied bombing. Approximate location is 51.523° N 3.440° E, looking to the west.
