I Know EVERYTHING about this Photograph. I know the loction, I know what day (and the time of Day) it was taken on. I Know the names of all the people. I even Know the Dogs name...... But I am not telling yet. YOU ALL have some time defore I disclose all.

In 1901 the then Lord Mayor of Cork, Edward Fitzgerald, proposed that Cork should stage an international industrial exhibition in 1902. The proposal was enthusiastically received by all sections of Cork society and planning for the exhibition soon began. The site chosen was an area of parkland between the Cork County Cricket Grounds and Wellington Bridge, now renamed Thomas Davis Bridge. The plans for the exhibition were extraordinarily imaginative and ambitious. It promised to be by far the most spectacular exhibition ever hosted in Cork

It opened on 1 May 1902 amid scenes of celebration and enthusiasm. Its success surpassed all expectations, attracting visitors from all over Ireland, Europe and beyond. After it officially closed on 1 November 1902, it was decided to stage a similar exhibition in 1903. The 1903 exhibition repeated the success of its predecessor and was graced by a visit from Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.

Exhibitions included a Canadian pavilion, art gallery, machinery hall and industrial hall. Entertainments included a water chute, a skating rink, switchback railway, temperance resaturant , a creamery, shooting gallery and an aquarium.

National Library of Ireland on The Commons Thanks, fixed above. Nothing to see except trees and rocks. But if you twiddle round into 3D the shape of the hills is similar and the sun is in the right place when looking sout-west.

I wonder is that the now-lost boathouse just downriver from Lord Brandon's cottage?

Here's a Streetview from the western shore of the Upper Lake, looking west - note the distinctive 'bump' to the left of the cloud-covered mountains - it has a steep step at right and a uniform slope at left, just like the bump to the left of the taller mountains in our boathouse photo.

Less than 100m NW of the point where Peng Shi took that panoramic image in 2023 is the site of a boathouse which lies 290m SW of Lord Brandon's Cottage - the boathouse is shown on the Ordnance Survey 6" map (1st edition), but it's just marked as a Quay on the last edition. The boathouse seems to be about 18m long on the first edition map, so it could be the one in the photo.

Cardinal Logue, who visited Lough Derg in 1913, had this to say: "When I was a young priest I often had occasion to attend their death-beds numbers of people who made the pilgrimage to Lough Derg, and every one of those death-beds was the death-bed of a saint. There was no need to get them to make a general confession or to repair anything in their past lives. One visit to Lough Derg was enough to secure that, and some of those I attended were in the habit of coming there every year. I gave them, of course, the Sacraments of the Church, and especially the greatest of all the Sacraments to strengthen them on their journey to Eternity, but I often thought that if they had died in the deserts of Central Africa they were sure to go to Heaven. "I have no doubt that, whatever else changes in Ireland, Lough Derg will never change It is as unchangeable as the hills by which we are surrounded. So long as the Irish Church exists, it will be a home of penance, and piety, and sanctification, and a source of wonderful graced to those who come here and make the Stations. . . . It would be impossible for a man to come in here with rancour in his mind. If he had any little touch of it, it drops into the Lake, either on his way in, or on his way out of the Island."
