Paul Philippe Cret (1876-1945) was the architect for this magnificent building. Some of the marble sculpture was designed by Albert Kelsey.

Frolich's Jack London (LOC)

good friend of Jack London Finn Haakon Frolich (1868 - 1947) Born in Oslo, Norway on Aug. 13, 1868. Frölich was educated by a tutor and then was a sailor until 1890 when he immigrated to New York. After working as a model for Daniel Chester French, he became his protégé. His art studies were continued at the ASL in NYC and in Paris at Ecole Nationale and Ecole des Beaux Arts. Coming from New York, he worked in Seattle where he was director of sculpture at Alaska-Yukon Expo of 1909 and continued in this capacity for the PPIE in San Francisco. During the WWI years he was an instructor at UC Berkeley and director of the Oakland Art Gallery. By 1921 he had moved to southern California where he was active as a sculptor for the movie industry. He ran Frölich's School of Sculpture in Hollywood from 1924-44 and spent his last three years as an instructor at the Carmel Art Institute. Frölich died in Carmel, CA on Sept. 5, 1947. Member: Southern Calif. Sculptor's Guild; Norse Studio Club. Exh: Paris Expo, 1900 (silver medal); Alaska-Yuko Pacific Expo (Seattle), 1909; Painters & Sculptors of LA, 1926; Long Beach Expo, 1928 (silver medal).

I have the original plaster casting in this picture and would like to know more about it. Apparently there are several copies of it and whoever took this photo had access to one. Any info?

" In California he struck up a lasting and happy friendship with Jack London because of their love of the sea and the playing of games like poker and chess. He lived with London for three months in 1912 with mutual enjoyment. "
