    He was born in 1891 in North Stainley, North Yorkshire and was the son of Walter and Marion Bairstow. In 1901 the family was living in the Warwickshire parish of Lillington St Mary at Kenilworth House. Walter was described as "Living on own means", aged 43 and born at Sutton-in-Craven. His wife was 41 and born in Bingley and their only other child at home, Marjorie, aged 13, had been born in Wharfedale. The family employed 8 live-in servants including a Governess.

    GWI Bairstow died on the 18th of July 1941 at Cranford, Victoria Drive, Bognor Regis. Probate was granted to Winifred Florence Brydges Bairstow, widow.

    He had married Winifred Florence Brydges Symonds (1889-1980) in 1915 in Bucklow, Cheshire.

    A printed ancestry shows that Walter Bairstow was JP and High Sheriff of Northamptonshire in 1908. He had married Marion, daughter of Alfred Sharp of Bingley 13 Sep 1882. Geoffrey was their eldest child, born 1 Aug 1891, Cyril Thomas Alfred born 2 July 1903, plus two daughters Agnes Irene and Marjorie Victoria.

    A 27th October 1925 passenger manifest shows that GWI and his family intended to make thier home in Italy. They were aboard the Nederland Royal Mail Line "Prins Der Nederlanden" heading for Genoa. Country of Intended Future Permanent Residence shown as Italy. Their last address in the UK was The Lodge, Towcester, Northamptonshire.

    No occupation given for GWI, then aged 34. He and his wife had two daughters: Bettina Ingilby-Bairstow aged 9 and Rachel Mary Ingilby-Bairstow aged 4. Also travelling with the family was 20yr old Miss Dorothy Georgina Glover.

    The family returned from Italy and, after GWI's death, made their home in the Chichester area. Bettina married there in 1944 and Rachel in 1946.
