LEWIS TEWANIMA (HOPI) One of America's greatest long distance runners. Member of U.S. Olympic Team in 1908 and 1912. In 1912 he set the U.S. record for the 10,000 meter run, winning an Olympic silver medal. This record stood until 1964 when it was broken by Oglala Lakota Billy Mills. Tewanima also set the world record for the indoor 10 mile race, at Madison Square Garden. Also, found this mention: "Mitchell Arquette has been elected captain of the cross country team_ for‘ 1910. “Chon” has been coming to the front as a distance runner and will take John Corn’s place as Tewanima’s running mate in the distance events of the year." -January 14, 1910 Arrow (pub.
