    Project SCORE launch. Orbited entire Atlas tank/sustainer engine section. Communications satellite and propaganda broadcast experiment. Recorded 1958 Christmas message from Pres. Eisenhower was broadcast on short wave radio band. Additional military active satellite communications were beamed up, recorded, and played back to other ground stations, in test of active repeater concept.

    This is Curt Johnston, who was Test Conductor for the launch of Atlas 10B (Project S.C.O.R.E.) and other Atlas launches. This steely-eyed missile man was in charge during the final phases of countdown. Johnston was nick-named the "Ohio cowboy" because, during Atlas launchings, he wore a "lucky" cowboy outfit which included a bright red string tie, a fancy shirt, cowboy breeches and boots.
