  Charley Armitage Born in the third quarter of 1885 Hull East Yorkshire. The eighth of eleven children born to John Frederick Armitage [b.1858 Southrop, Lincs. d.1924] a Joiner, and Jane Walmsley Armitage nee Turner [b.1857 Wainfleet, Lincs.] The 1891 census records him living at 45 Clifton Terrace, Myton, Kingston upon Hull, East Yorks, with his parents and siblings; Louisa [b.1873], Lillian [b.1875], Florence [b.1877], George [b.1880], Jenny [b.1882], Harry [b.1884], Mary [b.1888] and Alice [b.1890]. Charley is recorded as being at school. The 1901 census records him now living at Liddel Street, Sculcoates, Hull, with his parents and siblings plus another sister and brother born since the last census; Ethel [b.1894] and John [b.1897]. Charley [spelled Charlie on the Census Enumerator’s sheet] is now employed as an Errand Boy. The 1911 census records him unmarried and still living with his parents, now at 35 Wellstead Street, Hessle, Hull. He is employed as the “Shop Man” in a Boot Shop. 33422 Private Charley Armitage 7th Btn. East Yorkshire Regiment (Duke of York’s Own) was killed on 24th April 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. His Attestation Papers have not survived and Medals Record Card does not indicate that he was killed and there is no address for further correspondence.
