By my calculations this is near the NW corner of Little Essex Street.

1. beachcomber australia As a young and idealistic first time candidate, personally well-known and highly respected by the people of his electorate, I certainly would, whether or not his party was disintegrating around him. But then again, if W. E. Johnson was running too, I'd be in a bit of a dilemma, as I'd likely know him through our mutual interest in photographing Sydney (he'd likely be a contact on Flickr!) :) 2. beachcomber australia A quick consult of The Plan Showing the "Rocks" Resumption confirms your calculations are spot on. The lane is Little Essex Street running down towards Upper Fort Street.

1. pellethepoet Ha! I don't think I would trust W.E. Johnson as a pollie - it is difficult to trust someone who has a tendency to date his artworks a little earlier than they are! 2. pellethepoet Beg to differ - the laneway (for which I know you have a special fondness and fascination) is the dotted line marked on the map between 91 and 89 (it is not easy to read). I wonder if John Degotardi Junior (the photographer) was joking with his title "95 1/2"?

That is Citadel Motors on the left, at the corner of Brunswick and Sackville Streets. The lot is currently occupied by Cambridge Suites.

There is no listing in 1888 Sands (compiled 1887) for the Royal Oak (est. 1837) in Millers Point (but there are five others in other areas of Sydney). A search of Trove reveals that by June 1882, John Sottero was operating a fish & chip shop, or rather, a fish and oyster saloon from the premises - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/28380580 . beachcomber australia Possibly before June 1882, however ... the Royal Oak name on the side wall could be a remanent, and may have remained there for some time after it finished trading as the Royal Oak. In Shirley Fitzgerald's Millers Point book, there is a photo showing the Royal Oak with the name emblazoned on the upper front of the building, which isn't there in this photo. So the photo may indeed be after 1882. Hmmn ...
