The 'Queen Mary'

    The clothes of the 3 people in the photo seems to date it to the late 1930s or thereabouts.

    The RMS Queen Mary arrived in Sydney for refitting at Cockatoo Dock as a troopship in April - May 1940. It was designated HMT Queen Mary (His Majestys Transport)

    On May 4, 1940 she left with 5,000 Australian troops aboard, sailing for England.

    The grey paint scheme shown in this photograph suggest that it was taken during wartime service.

    Maybe on 4 May 1940 - a newsworthy day.

    Wartime service saw the Queen Mary in Sydney port several more times in the cause of freedom:

    By comparing this to a postcard at the State Library of New South Wales which has identified the ship in the period 1940 - 1945, and by comparing paint schemes, we can see that the Queen Mary here is in wartime paint livery.

    Therefore, this photograph was also taken between 1940 and 1945 inclusive.
