I have been to this aircraft's original crash site outside Edward's air base nearest to MoJave Ca. It is well marked and has a log to sign. If I find my photos I will post them.

A flying sequence of the classic little seen aircraft is featured in the 1950's sci-fi movie, "The War of the Worlds" starring Gene Barry.

In 1982, I was an Officer Candidate at Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School, at NAS Pensacola. Across the street from my barracks were the old seaplane hangars. Being an inquisitive sort, I found my way into one of the hangars one Saturday and found it filled with old aircraft intended for the Naval Aviation Museum; including the D.558 now on display at the Museum. I opened the canopy to find an empty compartment, the seat being removed. Nevertheless, I crawled in, closed the canopy, and for a minute... I was a kid again. Every time I see the D.558... I smile.

This is Northrop F-89D-50-NO / F-89J Scorpion 53-2461 (0-32461) "FV-461" in the Montana ANG's 186th FIS, 120th FIG @ Great Falls IAP, one of ~350 F-89Ds that were converted to F-89J standard in 1956-1958. Sent to AMARG on 14 Sep 66 and scrapped in 1969.
