He commanded the crew of Navy-Curtiss NC-4 Flying Boat and was navigator. See www.aviation-history.com/navy/nc4.html Between May 16 and May 31, 1919, Lt. Commander A. C. Read, U. S. Navy and crew of the flying boat NC-4, made the first transatlantic flight from Newfoundland to Plymouth, England by way of the Azores and Portugal.

Many of the names here appear later as names of Naval Air Stations in the Pensacola area: Bronson, Corry, Saufley, Whiting, Mustin (Mustin Beach Officers Club).
