P-38 Lightning fighter flying over Moreton Bay, ca. 1943

This particular aircraft is a photo reconnaissance variant of the Lockheed P-38 Lightning, a Lockheed F-4 Lightning (USAAF Ser. no. 41-2217, c/n 222-5435). Note the covered gun ports and large camera window on the port side of the nose behind the number "17." As per the Joe Baugher site, its disposition is listed as, "salvaged in Australia Sep 26, 1944." See: www.joebaugher.com/usaf_serials/1941_1.html www.joebaugher.com/usaf_fighters/p38_9.html

Interesting photo Alan Since it very much looks like an RF-100A, the most likely candidate should be 53-1600. Unfortunately I don't have a separate list of RF-100A, so I cannot say if that really was one or not. Happy New Year and thanks for another year of hard work from your side to keep SDASM one of the best on FLICKR Stig

Unfortunately my theory was wrong. After some searching I found the six modifed RF-100A and 53-1600 was not one of them. Sorry about that Stig
