"Redbank Range Railway Tunnel was opened in February 1867 and is the first railway tunnel to be used by the NSW Railways." from - www.paranormalaustralia.com/hauntings/tunnel.html

I had trouble finding out exactly where this tunnel is. I think it is just north of the current rail tunnel, shown as a pale track on this GoogleSatellite photo - maps.google.com.au/maps?q=Picton+NSW&hl=en&ll=-34... .

I think the photo must be of the west end of the tunnel due to the locomotive's shadow on the right. It is confusing because the old original line of the railway was superseded in 1919. More here - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picton_%E2%80%93_Mittagong_loop_rai...

beachcomber australia Yes this was taken from the western or country end of the tunnel.

highplains68 Thanks for the confirmation! With all the loops, twists and turns near Picton, it is difficult to see which is 'town' and 'country'.

The State Library of Victoria has a version of this image by William Hetzer dated 1866, ie this is before the tunnel's opening. Their copy includes the title -

The book/journal/box in her hand has caught my attention. Is it one of those that Victorian ladies used to write their secrets in? Looks expensive in any case!
