Notice the VR (Victoria Regina) over the keystone, marking the reign in which a public bulding was built & put over every public building when I was a child (EIIR by then) "Designed by architect H A Wilshire and constructed in 1839 as a result of a competition organised by the NSW government architect. The dominant feature externally is the circular heads over openings, the most significant being the horseshoe shaped entrance which draws attention to the heavily moulded timber gates. The original governor's residence is at the right of the gates and is largely obscured by a large tree, but the gaol itself is easily visible to the public." I beg to differ the construction date of the gaol in the above post by MargaretsFamily. I refer the website www.clarencehistory.org.au/timeline.html The timeline indicates 1893 the Gaol was opened. I also have a similar photograph as shown here and, on it it clearly states "1893".

Current Streetview. OSI 6". According to wikipedia, it was " housing the US Army during World War II, and later being used as a dance hall during the 1950s and 1960s".

The current castle dates from 1839 according to the DIA but the interior of it was not finished as the owner Robert Ogilby died. "His successors took no interest in the castle and the partially-complete castle was neglected before it had even been finished." It was almost demolished by Limavady Council but on public outcry was instead renovated.

The ruins of the castle of Dungiven stand at the top of the street and are not very striking in themselves although standing on a slope they command some fine views in the valley This place was built in the time of James I with a fosse and mounds in front and flanked by two round towers The interior courts appear to have been well fortified but the work of ruin is so complete as to leave little but guesses to the non antiquarian. At the Plantation of Ulster, this part of County Derry in which Dungiven Castle was situated was granted to the Skinners' Company, and their grant from the Honourable the Irish Society was dated 1617. lordbelmontinnorthernireland.blogspot.ie/2013/09/dungiven...
