About the Nationaal Archives of the Netherlands
The National Archives in The Hague preserves almost one thousand years of history, in the form of over 125 kilometres of archives, almost 300,000 maps and drawings and more than 15 million photos. The archives were created by the national government, but archives from private institutions and individuals are also preserved at the National Archives as interesting supplements to the government archives.

No photo will ever truly depict the horrors of WW1 in particular the battles in western europe around France and Belgium [Flanders Fields]. My grandfather served in WW1 as part of the ANZAC. He was a corporal in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force Auckland 3rd Battalion Rifle Brigade D Company and spent 3 years 157 days overseas from 1915-1919. Fought in theatres in Egypt 2x 1915 & 1916, then embarked for France/Belgium and fought there in 1916 where was finally wounded. He also suffered every illness going around including piles, phlebitis, hemorrhoids, septic throat and influenza. It must have been hell on earth for him. Thankfully he survived and returned to New Zealand. But there was no psychological counselling available in those days. So he would have suffered mentally. Nobody who fought in WW1 wouldn't have suffered mentally. War affects families in strange ways I can vouch for that.
