Flooded Walcheren Island

  • Johannes Smit said:
The name of the island is WALCHEREN. The Scheldt is called Schelde in Dutch. I also learned in Dutch history classes that it were the British that flooded the island, not the Germans. This was thought to be a way to more easily break the German resistence in the area.

Thank you very much for this information. I just noted on a different photo that dealing with archival photographs is difficult because often the person who took the photo wrote inaccurate information on the back. These particular photos had multiple spellings of "Walcheren" and we maintain inaccurate notations along with a correction note. However, I will change the titles of these Flickr versions while maintaining the English spelling of Scheldt. And thanks also for the correction regarding the flooding.
