The full title for this church is St Michael and All Angels Church. It is a CCAP ( Church of Central Africa, Presbyterian) church still in use today.

The Description Guphorbia should read Euphorbia- the candelabra plant in the centre of the picture

Also, could this be 'in Mr Alex White's garden'? A helichrysum ('everlasting flower') found on Mulanje is called 'whitei' - I think it's the yellow one (the silvery-white one is called Buchananei - excuse the spellings). Both White and Buchanan (a missionary/agriculturalist and Acting Consul) lived in Nyasaland around about that time. Later: I realise that Alex White couldn't be the man who gave his name to the Mlanje helichrysum, since it is 'whytei' and not 'whitei' (see a later reference to the Mlanje cedar, also named 'whytei')

My great grandfather, William Robert Anderson (top left), was born in NSW Australia 30 Mar 1843. He was licensed as a surveyor in NSW in 1864 and until 1892 or 1893 worked as a mining surveyor in NSW, He then left Australia to take a position as surveyor in the then Nyasaland Districts Protectorate and in 1896 was appointed Chief Surveyor in the Protectorate. In 1900 William was stationed at Blantyre and died there on 22 Oct 1900.
