A bad day for the Centaur program, even though it was the first stage (Atlas) that failed, not the Centaur stage. A valve on the Atlas closed due to an instrumentation pressure transducer being installed in the wrong orientation. The rocket rose 5 ft., then collapsed upon itself, and produced a nice explosion. This explosion all but destroyed pad 36A, one of 2 Atlas-Centaur pads. Pad 36B was quickly completed and rushed into service so that Atlas-Centaur launches could continue.
