The survey dates from the late 17th or early 18th Century, when John Greene was City Surveyor for Dublin. There was another similar Survey being auctioned a few years ago.

The hill is the viking Thingmount. The Sir William Davis mentioned in the chart, had the Thingmount levelled and the soil carted away that was deposited to form the elevated ground now occupied by Nassau Street. He felt his plot was too valuable and the "hill" was in his way of realising the full profit of his plot. www.geocities.ws/heatheneurope/thingmount "In 1682 the mount itself was demised to Sir William Davis, Recorder of the city and then Chief Justice of the King's Bench. He had a residence adjoining the mount and a fee-farm grant was made to him with the avowed object of clearing the ground. His petition for this grant states that "the ground on which the mount stands, being very small and the mount itself being very high, the cost of levelling it and carrying it away would be a vast charge". A mass of earth and stone, 40 feet high and 240 feet in circumference could not be removed without great expense, but the site was, ultimately, too valuable to lie unhindered and was used in the raising of Nassau Street, then called Saint Patrick's Well Lane, to prevent further flooding and the street elevated 8 to 10 feet above it. This can still be seen today as Nassau Street is on quite a height above the adjoining grounds of Trinity College."

Yes they were. The door on right side leads down a corridor lined on each wall with many interesting marble memorials to wealthy parishioners and sons fought in the great war. this is not open to the public but if [like me] you have an inquiring mind you should go view them. Then get a view of the vaults best bring a friend. O shrine of the wealthy can it be that this is all that remains of thee.

Of all the military and royal statuary in Dublin, that of William III drew most aggression, serving as it did as a focal point for annual Orange celebrations on July 1, the anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne, and on November 4, the king’s birthday. On these dates the statue was painted white, the figure adorned with a yellow cloak, the horse garlanded with orange lilies and ribbons, and the surrounding railings painted orange and blue. Placing shamrock and green and white ribbons (the national colours) under the horse’s uplifted foot was even more provocative to the nationalists, who retaliated with stone throwing and rioting. In 1710 the statue was smeared with mud and its sceptre stolen by several students from nearby Trinity College, more of whom were expelled. It was smeared with tar several times, and watchmen had to be posted at the statue to protect it. It was finally taken after it was badly damaged in an explosion in November 1928.
