    earliest possible date for this is March 22, 1982 the first launch with an unpainted external fuel tank.

    although it really doesn't look like Columbia, with its black chines, which would push the earliest date back to April 4, 1983 - Challenger's first flight.

    In a couple of weeks we will be headed to Florida to see our first Space Shuttle launch. Do you know of any good viewing areas open to the public? I want to be as close as possible, but due to my wife's bad knee, we can't walk very far. Any advise will be appreciated.

    How did these guys get in there without hardhats? NASA always made photographers ( and most VIPs ) wear helmets in the VAB. There are barricades, but this group is not in the little pen that the bus tour groups used to be confined in.
