Hi, this is a beautiful picture but this place is not San Sebastiano al Vesuvio for its position. Maybe this is another error of Shaffer or someone who wrote the wrong description under these images. That photo maybe shows the 1944 eruption from Trecase or Torre del Greco.

This place is not San Sebastiano but Massa di Somma included in 1944 in to the border of Cercola. Shaffer named generically a lot of his picture with name of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, even if they were taken in other places.
